Lanzarote information by people who know Lanzarote
# 1.
From the UK: don't bring Euros, bring Pounds! The exchange rates on Lanzarote are much better: £ 1 = € 1,13 (Sept. 2009) No commission, but some have clause minimum amount: ask before you make the deal. Note: exchange rates can vary on a daily bases! the £ is not only connected / linked to the €, but also to the $ !!!
# 2.
Absolute Must See: Timanfaya (volcano area), Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes (and it’s secret!) and the Cesar Manrique Foundation (house). Admission each: adults: €8,- children: 4€ (7-12years)
Note: Jameos del Agua is also opend in the evening / at night on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (7PM-2AM, admission: €9,- / 4,50)
# 3.
Regular excursions: Grand tour, North tour, south tour, crater walking, submarine, diving, boat trips (sail, catamaran, submarine, ... ) and trips to Fuerteventura. Note: the grand tour is a combination of a shortened north and shortened south tour.
Note: excursions aren't cheap (± €50-65 p.p.), but usually incl. lunch. Besides, when you rent a car, you'll miss the explanation / stories from the tour-guide.
#4.
Also to do / see: Jardin de Cactus, Mirador del Rio, Monumento al Campesino (museo), dinner at "El diablo", Papagayo beaches, Famara beach (& dunes), Orzola beaches, LagOmar (house / garden / restaurant), El Golfo (green crater lake), los Hervideros, la Geria (wine area), Guinate Zoo, Agua park Costa Teguise, Rancho Texas, (helicopter) flight tours and all kind of sports like karting, paint-ball, golf, fishing (also see sports at the "Groups")
# 5.
Lanzarote has only a 5% tourist-tax (I.G.I.C.), for the rest it’s TAX FREE!
Extra cheap: perfumes, tobacco, alcohol (in shops) and petrol. For the rest, on average, not much difference in prices with the UK, Germany or the Netherlands (because it's an island, everything has to be imported (expensive).
# 6.
If you rent a car: “all-insurance” does not cover everything! The petrol-tank is probably not full (turn it in with roughly the same amount of petrol). Obey the rules, the fines for traffic-violations are very steep on Lanzarote! Note: with rental cars you are never insured on dirt roads! (Also see the "News" / Footwear compulsorily on Lanzarote)
# 7.
Be very careful buying anything at the electronics-shops! High chance (risc) you’ll be ripped off: if it's not the price, than the (illegal and/or fake) merchandise it self! In case you regret a purchase: go back to the shop a.s.a.p. (with the receipt) and ask for your money back. If they give you a hard time, or simply refuse: tell them you´ll come back with the police or Guardia Civil!
# 8.
There are several beautiful, small, quiet beaches: look for tiny corridors between houses and businesses.
# 9.
In some restaurants the “complimentary” bread & butter is NOT for free!
If you don’t want to pay for them: decline them when they are served. Make sure they don’t “suddenly” appear on the bill!
#10.
Locals say good afternoon to each other till 9PM! So don’t go out for dinner at 18h00. If you’re not the only one in the restaurant, the other people are still having lunch! In some places breakfast is served until that time!
#11.
Don’t be afraid to take a taxi: they are very cheap! For longer distances agree on a price first!
For transport from and to the airport check out the LTN or lanzarote-webcam homepage (top - left): CanalTravel!
#12.
Do your tax free shopping on the island; the tax free shops on the airport (behind customs) are usually more expensive. (But still cheaper than at home)
#13.
Yes, there are cockroaches on Lanzarote, they are simply indigenous! They are harmless, but if you really don’t like them … in most kitchen-cupboards you’ll find an aerosol (spray in the chinks). If you really, really can’t stand them: ask for a room / apartment on the 2nd floor (or higher)!
#14.
Lanzarote is relatively safe, but just in case: rent a safe! (caja fuerte)
